The Counselling Process
First steps:
Once you make contact, then we arrange for a brief phone call/zoom (about 10-20 minutes long, no charge). This is in order to clarify what you’re looking for and determine if I will be the right fit to support you. This also helps you to know what to expect from counselling sessions with me and gives you the opportunity to ask any questions about the process. The fit has to be good for both the client and the therapist. If we do decide that we can work together, then I send you an intake form to complete. From there, you can make an appointment using my online calendar.
What to expect:
I provide a non-judgmental, trauma-informed and strengths-focused space for clients to:
-
define their goals and areas of their life that they want to improve
-
explore their feelings, thoughts, behaviour and patterns in regards to specific issues
-
identify and explore potential barriers including unhelpful patterns
-
explore challenges, dynamics and communication in relationships
-
explore and break entrenched patterns of relating to build healthier relationships
-
recognise and build on their personal strengths & self-insights
-
improve their communication skills and decision-making tools
-
build mental health literacy that they can utilise in their life
-
keep accountable to their goals and progress in a structured way
-
have a safe space to feel vulnerable and emotionally supported in their struggles
Doing the work:
Therapy works best when there are clear goals that have been defined and agreed by client and therapist. Otherwise, counselling can become quite aimless! Good therapy happens when clients are doing the work outside of sessions too. This often means doing some agreed 'homework' between sessions. This might include engaging with journalling, strategies or pyschoeducational videos/audiobooks. My style aims to build client's mental health literacy and tools so client's are upskilling and learning language they can use in their life and relationships for life! When working with anxiety and phobias, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy focused sessions are typically quite structured.
